How has women's literacy in rural UP changed since Census 2011?
Rural female literacy in Uttar Pradesh stood at
48.5% per Census 2011
[1]. NFHS-5 (2019–21) suggests a clear improvement:
63.2% of rural women aged 15–49 are now literate
[2].
The gain is uneven across districts. UDISE+ 2021–22 still records ~1.2M out-of-school girls aged 6–14 in the state [3], concentrated in the eastern districts — suggesting the literacy gap is closing among older cohorts faster than it is shrinking at the entry point.
